Final with sound

ERRORS

Uuupps....I don´t think you can hear the sound of my video....I need to fix this...I´ll uploaded this afternoon...Sorry guys.

FINAL PROJECT.

While thinking about what can a stroke tell us, what can a drawing suggest, I came up with the concept for my piece. I created a drawing tool to make one drawing that shows a part of itself and hides another one depending on the music. The drawer makes a picture. The picture, the drawing, is always the same. However, it reveals itself in different ways depending on the music that is playing.

My idea was to put five different songs, four of them done by singers from the countries that represent the biggest groups of immigrants in Spain. The last one, is flamenco music, the music that most represents Spain.  The fact that the line, the drawing appears and looks different depending on the music played even though it is always the same allows me to create a metaphor about tolerance and respect in the Spànish comunity. It is a way to embrace multiculturality while drawing. We are all the same people, we are always represented by the same stroke, even though we might look different.

The different songs I used are from the first to the last, South African, Eastern Europe, Central American, North African and the last one is Spanish.

I did the drawing tool combining examples from Zach (gesture examples), improving drawing tools that I created for previous assignments (like Draw With Emotion and Tempt Project). Also, I used the class perlin that Ruiz Madeira uses in his Reactive Scketches. In his case, it gives the drawing a more organic feeling. I don´t really think I took full advantage from his class –I ended up not using most of his code because I couldn´t really understand it- . From his code, I also used the  variable fttList (that has 512 values for the music) to make the line be changed by the music. What I basically did, was adapting my Draw With Emotion, in which I created a line that could have its alpha, red, green, blue and thickness  modified depending the velocity, the amount of space and other properties that the drawing made had. In this case, I related the alpha, red, green, blue and thickness to the variable that takes values from the music, the fttList.

I tried to incorporate music in Zach’s gesture-pitch but there was no way I could make it so that the drawing tool took music that I already had in my computer…

Hope you guys enjoy it!

Have an awesome summer

EVERYTHING I PROMISED FOR LONG AND I FINALLY MADE

Well, I've spent a semester promising I would make videos. Finally I did! I couldn´t make, (I don´t really know why) for the video for "Drawing Tool for Collective Thoughts" and I am having troubles uploading The Spiral i made....So I don´t know if I´ll be able to uploaded. If not, I´ll show it in class.

HWXX: DRAWING WITH A STRANGER

After proving what we all suspected, that the public space is the playground where our intimacy is revealed to the big brother, "el ojo que todo lo ve", like we say in spanish, I decided to draw my experience with a stranger. I got inspired in the design of the, so loved, American flag. How the flag is used inspired me to make this project. I thought about the symbols behind the flag and how national pride is used as a way to create the society of the fear. -If you want to be a good patriot, show me what you have in your bag- kind of thing. How the fear of terrorism is perpetuated using the flag as a symbol of protection.

So, I created a design with the stars and strokes of the flag, using its colors. I tried to see if the stranger could recognize the flag. So i asked them to make a drawing using the shapes in the design I made. I just tried it with two people. the first one, Fabio, who was an italian citizen visiting my friend. the second was Pati, the woman who works at the Deli across the street. I´d like to do it with american people.

HWX. WALKING ASSIGNMENT

Well, after promising during two weeks that I would upload all the work I have been doing for TaeYoon, i finally got the strength and the time to really do it. As you guys knew, I decided I would create a set of rules to critique the notions of control and surveillance that define society now. We live in a society that functions around the concept of fear. It is the reason under which governmental control uses different techniques of alarm and propaganda.

RULES:

1. Initialization: Start walking, from Union Square, to Ground 0.

2. If subject sees policemen or firemen, subject walks on opposite direction.

2. If subject sees suspicious bag/container, subject follows object 2 streets. Then subject walks direction Ground 0.

3. if subject sees or hears "terrorism", "protect/protection", "alert/alarm", police/policemen", "save/safety", subject turns and walks opposite direction.

4. If subject sees American flag, subjects turns left,

5. If subject doesn´t see/hear anything for during three streets, subject walks Ground 0 direction

6. Program lasts 120 minutes.

The first image illustrates the path were the rules brought me. I find interesting the shapes of the drawing that is created on the map. The squares represents any symbols of nationalism founded or symbols of controls. Most of them were flags (I never, never in my whole life I had seen such amount of flags. We know they are out there, but once you pay attention to them, they appear everywhere)...Not to talk about the policemen and firemen...

The blue line, pictures the shortest walk to my objective, Ground 0.

These next images are some of the documentation done during the process.

Union Square

This two next images. In them, me, getting certainly pissed while not being able to get out from drawing squares in the city.

One wasn´t enough...two, just to make sure nobody missed it...

Next image, Relocated ad, a reality show about the witness protection program.

A sign between the Lower East Side and Chine Town...And in the other corner, a surveillance camera...They must be pretty safety hanging out in the corner...

After, two hours of walking ...my prize: A wall reminding me that even thought some governments might have forgotten it, we do have rights. We have the right of intimacy, and freedom.

HW_9. FOR TEMPT FROM ANNITA

I created a brush for Tempt. I got the inspiration from observing some of his graffiti...I observed that in some of them he uses three different layers of paint to create shadows and volume...Three dimensional effects to his bidimensional graffiti. I also added some dots inside the type as well as outside, since I saw that he uses this technique in some pieces. I had funnnnn!

Of rocks when I can make it work...

Hope you guys enjoy it!!

Tempt, if you see this, I hope you like it!!!Of course we will never do it as well as you but, we try hard...Enjoy it!!!

HW7_DRAW UNTIL YOU CRY

I made some drawings last week...sorry for my delay...my thesis is taking over my life, I guess. I have uploaded two of the drawings I made. I am an easy cryer...I am a really nostalgic person and I cry from emotion a lot, remembering Barcelona, my family and my friends...I tend to idealize the past. Whenever I think about my grandparents, I always cry. They are all alive, but they are 85 years old...I cry thinking that they, one day, die. I cry because I am here and I can not enjoy their company here. I cry because they cannot visit me because they are too old. I know that rationally, coming to nyc is really good for me and I love being here, but everything has its pros and cons...not seeing them is definitely a con...So, I know I didn´t do the required homework, because what I did was making an effort not to cry while drawing my grandfather who lives in the countryside and the little town where he was born...deep flat Spain.

HW8_GET WASTED IF YOU CAN

For my walking homework i tried to walk from Montrose (I would take the subway to union Square) to World Tread Center...if I can... I titled it "Get Wasted If You Can"...Eventually one could be able to get to the World Tread Center, where our insanity and obsession for protection an being "safe" started...In an ideal world, we could get wasted with my drawing tool...I suspect, it is not gonna be able to happen...

HW8_CONTACT FREE ART

I decided to create what in spanish we call "polluelos"... little chickens.  They get placed so that they look like the "Chicken army".

My interpretation of the inorganic ended up turning into something abstract but colorful!

I also made a drawing inspired in the texture of crystal when something gets broken and it smashes in infinite little pieces.

And here some cells.

Some flowers!!!!

The first drawing I made were some sunflowers which pattern gets constructed and grows...I wish I knew how to use a movie grabber...but... I still haven´t figure it out. I keep on promising videos and they never get there...Maybe tomorrow? Since then, enjoy a sunny day with sunflowers!

HW7_MOOD ANALYSER

For my mood analyzer, I decided that the mood in which the drawer is while drawing will be conveyed through the use of color, thickness and alpha. Observing previous gestures that we have studied, I realized the thickness of the stroke depends on the velocity in which the drawing is made, more than on the angle of the drawn line. So I decided to link the variables used in my drawing tool to different mood states:

If the bounding box is big---the drawer wants to get noticed---the line he is drawn will turn into a really thick line.

However, one can want to be noticed by drawing in an big canvas but drawing a lot (having a big total lenght). In that case, I made the thickness of the drawing be a bit smaller so that the lines in the drawing don´t get mixed with each other.
I linked the angle change to the red, so bigger angle change, more red. My thought was that if we draw having a bigger angle change, we are conveying how nervous we are...That's why in this case, the line gets a bit more red.

Here we have an example of a big angle change...It is yellow because I linked the time we spend drawing with the green (my thought was in nature people take it easy, take their time to do things). That's why eventhough one is nervous while drawing lines with a big angle change, there is a lot of green (and no blue) and lots of red so it is yellow. Since the bounding box is smaller, the thickness of the line is smaller too...

I have more drawings in other situations to get posted...I´ll be posting them after class....Donm´t wanna miss the train! more, coming really soooooooooon!

HW6_RESAMPLE THREAD INTO A SPIRAL BY HAND

I created five strokes with purple thread and I resampled them into spirals. I placed them onto a black background simulating the drawing tool that I created with code.

The five strokes drawn with the mouse before getting resampled into spirals. Now made by hand with a purple thread onto a black background.

HW6_RESAMPLE STROKES INTO A SPIRAL

My drawing tool resamples spirals that will be placed in different places in the screen. Five different strokes can be drawn one after the other, getting resampled into five different spirals that have different radius and are placed in different places. to do it i looked up the spiral formula in the internet, and i made it work similarly as Zach done with the circle formula, dividing the cosinus by TWO_PI. When I put a small radius in the start animating in the testapp.cpp, it gets clearer that the stroke drawn turns into a spiral. If you put a big radius, you cannot really identify what is the shape that the first stroke made is resampling into. Here you have the five strokes turning into spirals:

The first images is the first stroke being resampled. The second is the stroke already resampled as a spiral. The third, the forth and fifth are the 2º, 3º , 4º and 5º stroke getting resampled.

The sixth image corresponds at the five strokes being already spirals and the image that follows is a detail shot.

The two last images are the same thing but drawing fast. So that the five spirals are a mess since they get to an order determined by the spiral shape.

The next step is to work getting different colors in each of the spirals and having the their radius be the last  point where the mouse stops drawing the strokes.
